My Favorite Baseball Quotes

Well, it is midway through the baseball season, so I thought I'd share some of my favorite baseball quotes:

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. ~A. Bartlett Giamatti, "The Green Fields of the Mind," Yale Alumni Magazine, November 1977

Baseball is ninety percent mental. The other half if physical.~ Yogi Berra

Baseball is like church. Many attend few understand.~ Leo Durocher

You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. ~Jim Bouton, Ball Four, 1970

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. ~Rogers Hornsby

Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer. ~Ted Williams

Baseball is a lot like life. The line drives are caught, the squibbles go for base hits. It?s an unfair game.~ Rod Kanehl

No game in the world is as tidy and dramatically neat as baseball, with cause and effect, crime and punishment, motive and result, so cleanly defined. ~Paul Gallico

Baseball is a game of inches.~ Branch Rickey

No one wants to hear about the labor pains, they just want to see the baby.--Lou Brock

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~Earl Wilson

What does a mama bear on the pill have in common with the World Series? No cubs. -- Harry Caray

Sandy's fastball was so fast, some batters would start to swing as he was on his way to the mound. ~Jim Murray, on Sandy Koufax

Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball, the rules and realities of the game.~ Jacques Barzun

I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us. ~Walt Whitman

I don't want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it. ~Rogers Hornsby

Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field? ~Jim Bouton, 1988

No matter how good you are, you're going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you're going to win one-third of your games. It's the other third that makes the difference. ~Tommy Lasorda

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all. ~Earl Weaver

Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem. ~Saul Steinberg

That's the true harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on a ball. ~Bill Veeck, 1976

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona. ~George F. Will, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball, 1990

"All last year we tried to teach him (Fernando Valenzuela) English, and the only word he learned was million." Tommy Lasorda

"I don't care if the guy (Jackie Robinson) is yellow or black, or if he has stripes like a god-damn zebra. I'm the manager of this team and I say he plays." ~ Leo Durocher

"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." ~ Jackie Robinson
